Pause and orient
Wash your hands, take a breath, and try a comfortable position. If an item is easily reachable, gentle clean fingers may be enough.
- Bear down gently
- Do not insert tools
- Stop if pain increases
When to get help
Seek same-day care if you cannot remove it easily, are unsure what is retained, or have strong odor, unusual discharge, bleeding, pain, fever, rash, dizziness, or feel unwell.
- Clinicians handle this regularly
- Tell them what may be retained and for how long
- Severe illness signs need emergency care
After removal
Symptoms that persist still deserve evaluation because irritation, infection, or another cause may be present.
- Do not douche
- Do not use deodorizing products
- Track whether symptoms improve
